Gender Responsive School and Community Safety Initiatives project has implemented in 8 public schools and 24 communities of Dudhauli municipality and Marin RM of Sindhuli district with funding support from Plan International Nepal to achieve a gender transformative, safer education and learning environment both at school and community levels that respond to and prepares for multi-hazards risks.
With a gender-responsive approach, DRR institutions like 8 School Disaster Management Committees (SDMCs) and 24 Community-Based Disaster Management Committees (CDMCs), were formed were developed in which 52% female members & 56% leading positions in SDMCs and 63% female members & 54% leading position in CDMC. The members of the committee were supported for their institutional development and capacitated on their role and responsibilities in the DRM cycle. School Safety Champions (SSC), Girl Safety Champions (GSC), and climate-smart school safety champions were developed, capacitated, and mobilized for DRR/CCA awareness in schools and communities. The mobile application was developed to carry out a Multi-Hazard Risk assessment of the schools. For the safe learning environment in the school Mensural hygiene management (MHM), drinking water improvement, and toilet construction and improvements are planned interventions in the project. A total of 836 students and 67 teachers from Dudhauli Municipality and Marin RM were benefitted by MHM facilities and toilet construction and drinking water improvement with RO filter installation. The project conducted a workshop and encourage and supports eight project schools to prepare CSSP (Comprehensive School Safety Plan), a learning continuity plan, and Support to integrate them into SIP which will guide disaster preparedness and response in the future. A total of 2046 students (1045 Girls, 1001 boys, 39 CWD) and 104 teachers/caretakers (47F,57M, 1PWD) were informed on disaster preparedness through awareness and mock drills. 24 Community Disaster Prepared and Response Plans (CDPRP) were prepared, whereas 24 Community Adaptation Plans for Action (CAPA) were also drafted on both municipalities those communities and 8 project schools have better response capacity after EWS orientations and first aid training likewise the project support to established garden in 8 project schools from both municipalities. Through the Green campaign, the students of eight targeted schools from grade 3 to grade 10 were supported with a nursery of perennial fruit plants. The project supported 1700 plant nurseries with two different varieties of tree and 300 bamboo nurseries to promote plantation which helps to decrease the effect of climate change, The project promotes a climate-smart agriculture system and distributed 80 plastic tunnels in both palikas and conducted capacity-building training to farmers to encourage them, likewise, project support to construct improved cooking stove in communities total 480 improved cooking stoves constructed in 24 communities which support to reduce deforestation by using fewer numbers of firewoods, The project conducts Solid waste management training to promote less use of plastic during the training the trainee was constructed 90 DOKO and put them on public places and school.
The project conducted an orientation on the establishment and localization/ Operation of the Local Emergency Operation Center (LEOC) for LDMC in nine municipalities of Sindhuli with coordination of DEOC and drafted DPRP and SOP of LEOC of Duadhuli and Marin municipalities, which were handed over to the municipality for approval and endorsement from a council of respective local government. The project helped LG to develop and endorse local-level education plans and policy likewise Local curriculum integrating DRR/CCA. The project advocated with Palika authorities to set up a gender-responsive DM fund and provided a seed fund worth NPR. 100,000 to respective LDMC and initiated the development of DM fund utilization
